Living River - Transormational Healing from the Source

Yoga instructionYoga

Yoga is an ancient practice that unifies our body, breath, and awareness to facilitate meaningful changes in the quality of our lives, including the state of our health, the clarity of our minds, the fluidity of our feelings, and the brightness of our spirit.   The personal transformations generated through the practice of yoga ultimately offer us experiences of greater connection, freedom, and grace.

I have been a student of yoga since 1998, when I took my first hatha yoga class.  Shortly afterwards I explored kundalini yoga, studying and practicing consistently under the mentorship of Gura Ravi Khalsa until 2001, when I discovered Anusara yoga.  I have been devoted to Anusara ever since.

Anusara yoga is a branch of hatha yoga that was founded by John Friend in 1997.  Anusara (a-nu-sar-a) is a Sanskrit word that means “flowing with Grace,” and “following your heart.”  I choose to study and practice Anusara because it is a profound system of yoga that brings together intelligent alignment principles, enlightening philosophical teachings, and a spirit of open-heartedness and community.  The fusion of these founding qualities makes for an incredibly powerful, life-affirming, and transformative approach to experiencing yoga.  Since my first Anusara class with Darren Rhodes in 2001, I have continued to deepen in my yoga studies, and am currently working towards becoming a Certified Anusara Teacher.  I have completed four Anusara teacher trainings, accumulating hundreds of hours of study with esteemed senior teachers, including Anusara founder John Friend. I feel especially blessed to have studied with Sianna Sherman for the last three years and I hope to continue to grow under her mentorship.

My teaching affirms the grace of embodiment. Each of my classes is designed around a central theme, weaving together alignment instruction with Tantric philosophy and nature-based teachings to create a meaningful opening of the heart.  Classes include asana (poses), meditation, pranayama (breath work), and therapeutic adjustments.

Private Instruction

The focused attention of individual instruction is incredibly helpful when you are just starting your practice, want to refine your understanding of alignment, have special therapeutic needs, or would like to workshop a pose or class of poses (inversions, backbends, etc).  You benefit from having all of your questions listened to and answered, along with developing a specific sequence of poses, breath techniques, or meditations to support the deepening of your yoga practice.

Student Testimonials

“Kate's Yoga rocks my world! Her teaching style fulfills me like no other and keeps me looking forward to our weekly sessions! Her seemingly infinite knowledge of asana guides me to a better understanding and correct alignment of each pose. Her deep insights keep me reminded of the spiritual aspect that nourishes me continually. Frequently, I leave yoga with Kate feeling as though I'm in a waking meditative state. I have a firm sense of groundedness and strength, as though I'm a tree growing with firmer roots as the weeks pass. Yoga through the heart has nourished all aspects of my being. I have much love and appreciation for Kate and am grateful that she shares her beautiful gifts with us.”

"I’ve been practicing Anusara yoga for about four years now, and I feel so lucky have met Kate. It’s hard to imagine Anusara getting better than it is, but Kate brings a loving and sweet energy to my practice that I haven’t found elsewhere. She possesses a sincere and generous desire to transmit the spirit of Anusara and has a strong capability to do so. She is knowledgeable about the Anusara principles and is committed to embracing the spirit of the practice, of opening to grace. Through her attentive instruction and touch, Kate helps me stay aligned and fully engaged. She encourages me to root my body, open my heart and tap into my own shakti energy. Her classes are challenging and grounded yet playful and light, striking a divine balance that nourishes my soul and keeps me coming back for more!"
J.K., Massage Therapist

“Kate is a gift. Monday through Friday I work a high stress desk job. Saturday and Siunday I am on a vineyard tractor. It was becoming increasingly difficult for me to routine physical tasks. At 53 years old, my blood pressure was going up and my patience, strength, and mobility were diminishing. Kate’s yoga classes quickly returned my mobility and core strength. Patience and blood pressure are works in progress; I miss having her in Sebastopol.”
R.N., Lawyer and Winemaker

“Your teaching has meant a lot to me. You are a truly inspired and inspiring teacher. Your intentions shine through so brightly there is no mistaking them. I am thankful to have had the opportunity to meet you and receive your teaching. You have a gift to make people feel they can freely express their dharma around you. What a precious calling!”

“It is in no small part due to your teaching skills that I feel the best that I have felt in a long time.”
